Season of Growth
We’ve talked about it here and there, but it’s safe to say that we’re currently experiencing a season of growth at Canonsburg UP Church! We’re seeing it in our worship attendance, where last year we experienced the first year-over-year growth in a dozen years (+6%) and this year we’re doubling that growth over last year through the first third of the year (+12%). That feels really exciting, especially when you remember, following Covid, how empty the sanctuary felt, and looked, especially during our 11am worship services!
We’re also set with our largest New Member class in 6 years – which was a perfect time to gather in a smaller room, right? And we’re going to welcome in a pair of confirmands for the first time in three years which is also exciting. And it was so great to see a full chancel for both Children’s Moments on Sunday!
But growth isn’t just numeric. Growth also happens as we mature and are transformed more and more into the image of Christ. That’s a lot less easier to see and understand, especially while it’s happening.
Jesus talked about growth as a by-product, not of our work (although we have a part in it) but of the Spirit’s work among us.
I mean, it would make me feel really great about myself if I could tell you that because I’ve done x, y & z, we’re experiencing growth here. But that wouldn’t be true. The growth we’re experiencing, both numerically and in maturity is happening because of God at work in our midst. Being open to God, and being honest that it’s God and not us, is what we’re called to do.
I’ll keep making this promise to you – that I’ll work on keeping my heart open to Jesus, and trying to foster a community that is doing that for others too. It’s honestly, so exciting to hear and see from people how they’re recognizing that and gathering with us to experience it. There’s lots of things we could be focused on in this world, but helping people experience Jesus and grow – in the ways Jesus, by the Holy Spirit, wants them to grow – is honestly, where it’s at.
I continue to be excited for the ride we’re on together, for the joy and the laughter (like I said on Sunday) that God gifts us together. And I can’t wait to see what God has in store for us during this great season of growth!
Welcoming You to Grow in Jesus,
Pastor Don
